When faith is integrated into counselling it offers a unique and powerful dimension to emotional and psychological well-being.
At a recent workshop i attended some statistics were shared;
A national survey cited in Australia revealed that nearly 70% of Australians hold religious or spiritual beliefs, and about half perceive spirituality as closely linked to their mental well-being https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10943-024-02214-1.pdf
Clinical research shows that honoring spiritual dimensions in therapy strengthens outcome https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mental-health-nerd/202503/faith-sensitive-therapy
For many, faith provides a foundation of hope, purpose, and resilience. It offers a perspective that extends beyond the present struggles, helping individuals find meaning in their pain and strength in their challenges. By incorporating faith into counselling, clients are given the space to explore their spirituality as a source of comfort and guidance.
I have worked with Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Buddists. Faith-based counselling does not impose beliefs but rather respects and nurtures an individual’s spiritual values. Integrating faith, allows for deeper conversations about forgiveness, purpose, and inner peace—elements that can be transformative in the healing process. When faith is acknowledged as a resource, counselling becomes a holistic experience that nourishes both the heart and the mind.
For those considering therapy and if exploring the spiritual dimension of your life is important to you, it’s a good idea to check with a therapist before you begin to make sure this is something they can support and integrate into the work.
If you’re a therapist and would like to explore how to thoughtfully integrate spiritual conversations into your work, consider bringing this into supervision with your supervisor.
